About ITOPP
ITOPP, Leader in Pulsed Power Systems
ITOPP: Advancing Pulsed Power and High-Energy Physics
ITOPP is a specialized engineering firm founded in 1997, dedicated to the design, manufacturing, and operation of Pulsed Power systems and High-Power Microwave (HPM) equipment. With nearly 30 years of continuous experience, the company has developed deep and recognized expertise in pulsed power architectures and high-energy electromagnetic systems. As a strategic partner for the defense & security, nuclear deterrence, and energy sectors, ITOPP provides high-performance solutions for the most demanding technical environments, managing the entire technology lifecycle—from initial concept and simulation to fabrication, testing, and operational support.
To meet the unique challenges of its partners, ITOPP operates on a custom-engineering basis. It does not engage in mass production; every system is developed to meet specific client specifications, stringent requirements, and operational constraints, ensuring optimized performance, reliability, and integration within complex operational environments.
Core expertise: pulsed power and high power microwave
Pulsed Power technology focuses on the controlled amplification of electrical power through the temporal compression of an electrical pulse. Based on the fundamental principle that energy is the product of power and time, ITOPP is able to generate extremely high peak power levels for high-precision and high-energy applications. Over several decades, the company has developed strong expertise combining system physics, high-voltage engineering, and advanced pulsed energy management.
ITOPP systems are designed to achieve exceptional performance, including:
- Currents reaching several million amperes
- Voltages reaching several million volts
- Pulse durations often below 100 nanoseconds
- Peak power exceeding 100 gigawatts
At the core of these systems, energy storage structures—often referred to as energy banks—provide controlled accumulation and rapid release of electrical energy, enabling very high current generation. Since the introduction of in the 1920s, which enabled multi-megavolt operation, pulsed power technologies have continuously evolved. Modern architectures such as Inductive Voltage Adders (IVAs) and Linear Transformer Drivers (LTDs) further enhance efficiency, compactness, and pulse shaping performance.
In parallel, ITOPP has developed strong expertise in High-Power Microwave (HPM) systems, which convert high-voltage pulsed energy into controlled electromagnetic radiation. These systems provide complementary solutions for advanced electromagnetic applications, including electronic system testing, resilience assessment, and controlled electromagnetic environments.
Strategic Applications
Pulsed power technologies play a key role in nuclear deterrence and advanced strategic research by enabling the generation of extreme physical conditions over very short timescales. Applications include isentropic compression and projectile acceleration for high-energy density physics, ultra-fast diagnostics such as flash radiography, the reproduction of lightning-strikes effects and the development and testing of directed energy weapon systems. These technologies also contribute to nuclear fusion research by supporting the creation and study of extreme plasma conditions.
By combining expertise across pulsed power and high-power microwave domains, ITOPP delivers high-performance systems ensuring precise energy control, high experimental reproducibility, and reliable data acquisition, supporting safety, system reliability, and technological sovereignty in defense and energy sectors.
