Cross-section of 3D matrices observed by scanning electron microscope - Before and after irradiation - ITHPP-Cirimat

Within the framework of a partnership with CIRIMAT (Inter-university Center for Research and Materials Engineering - UMR CNRS 5085), ITHPP has collaborated in a research project on polysaccharidic scaffolds: 3D biomaterials obtained with biopolymers to be used for cell based therapy. Regenerative medicine has high hopes for this approach. However the decontamination of these materials by conventional methods has deleterious effects. Electron beam irradiation having shown its interest, it is in this context that ITHPP was solicited. The aim of this work was to study the impact of electron beam irradiations on polysaccharidic scaffolds.

The results are encouraging, the experiments proved the effectiveness of electron beams on polysaccharidic scaffolds while preserving their integrity, physicochemical properties and biocompatibility.

These experiments led to a publication in the scientific journal Carbohydrate Polymers: Low-energy electron beam sterilization of solid alginate and chitosan, and their polyelectrolyte complexes in Carbohydrate Polymers. Research continues and so other results are expected.
